Creating Meaningful Days for Your Loved One at Home
How Personal Care Supports Daily Independence
Starting the day can become difficult when bathing, dressing, grooming, mobility, or preparing breakfast requires more physical effort than it once did.
For seniors in Fairfax and throughout Northern Virginia, Personal Care provides respectful assistance with these daily routines while helping the individual remain involved in choices and activities to the extent possible.
Creating a Meaningful Day
At Thrive at Home, we believe every day should have purpose and joy. Our caregivers create moments of connection, engagement, and meaning that help your loved one thrive.
What Is Personal Care?
Personal Care is hands-on, non-medical assistance with Activities of Daily Living, commonly called ADLs. These activities include bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, mobility, and transfers.
Personal Care does not include skilled nursing, medical treatment, wound care, medication administration, or therapy. It may be provided alongside services from a physician, home-health agency, therapist, hospice provider, or other authorized healthcare professional.
When a senior mainly needs conversation, meals, errands, transportation, or light household support without hands-on assistance, Companion Care may be the more appropriate starting service.
What Personal Care Includes
Bathing and hygiene
Safe, unhurried support with showering, bathing, oral and skin care, delivered with patience and complete respect for privacy.
Dressing and grooming
Help selecting clothing, getting dressed, hair care, and maintaining personal appearance.
Toileting and incontinence care
Matter-of-fact, compassionate assistance that treats dignity as non-negotiable.
Mobility and transfers
Safe, steady support moving from bed to chair, navigating stairs, and moving through the home with confidence.
Fall prevention and safety
An attentive presence that reduces risk and responds immediately when something goes wrong.
Medication reminders
The right medications, taken at the right time, without anything falling through the cracks.
Meal preparation and feeding
Nutritious meals prepared with care, and support for those who need help eating.
Light housekeeping
A clean, comfortable living environment that feels good to come back to.
Transportation to appointments
Reliable rides to medical visits, therapy, and essential appointments.
Condition monitoring
Noting changes in physical condition, appetite, mood, or behavior and communicating them promptly to your family and our clinical team.
Who Personal Care Is Right For
Personal Care is right for seniors whose daily physical needs have grown beyond what they can manage safely on their own. Families reach out when a loved one is living with:
If your loved one’s situation is not on this list, that does not mean Personal Care is not the answer. It means the right answer starts with a conversation.
A history of falls or a recent fall-related injury
Parkinson’s disease affecting movement and daily function
Stroke recovery, including limited mobility, weakness, or cognitive changes
COPD, heart failure, or conditions that make physical exertion difficult
Diabetes with complications affecting mobility or self-care
Post-surgical recovery requiring consistent hands-on daily support
Cognitive decline affecting the ability to safely manage personal hygiene
General frailty that has made daily routines feel precarious
Care That Begins Before the First Visit
At Thrive at Home, Personal Care does not begin with a caregiver showing up at the door. It begins with a Registered Nurse conducting a complimentary on-site assessment and care plan meeting at your loved one’s home.
Our caregivers are employees, not contractors. Every applicant goes through a rigorous screening process that includes criminal background checks, driving record checks, skills testing, professional references, and tuberculosis testing. A minimum of two years of experience is required. Every application is reviewed personally by our owner before a hire is made.
Once care is underway, an experienced Registered Nurse conducts periodic quality assurance visits. Our hallmark is continuity, the same familiar caregiver showing up consistently. Thrive at Home has been serving Northern Virginia families for over 15 years.

This letter is to express my gratitude for the wonderful care and support your team provided to my Husband SK while under your care. Special thanks to S who was our angel in the form of our caregiver. I can’t say enough good things about S that could describe what relief she brought to us. She was kind, knowledgeable, happy and best of all she knew what we needed which changed daily.Everyone who was sent to care for SK did a commendable job as did the office staff. Muriel who took so many of my calls was always patient and understanding. What your team did for us will always be remembered and appreciated and I hope they know how important the job they do really is.Gratefully
“My mother has been a client with Thrive at Home for the last six years. The primary daytime caregiver is awesome, knows mom well and has dealt kindly with her changing personal and medical needs. The other caregivers who come, when the primary can not, are also great. I have been comfortable in leaving mom in their capable and experienced hands, to include some overnight stays. The office personnel are easy to work with, very helpful and work with scheduling needs. I would highly recommend Thrive at Home if you need part-time or full-time care for your loved one”
Isata is the perfect match for my mother. She is caring and very professional. My mom loves her

Personal Care FAQs
Yes. Personal Care can be structured as hourly daytime visits, Overnight Care, or Live-In Care for those who need a consistent presence through the day and night.
Continuity of care is our hallmark and we protect it deliberately. Consistent care from the same caregiver is a standard we hold ourselves to.
Home health care is medical care delivered at home, including skilled nursing, physical therapy, and wound care. It is ordered by a physician and covered by Medicare for a defined period. Personal Care is non-medical daily living support that does not require a physician's order and is not time-limited. The two services complement each other well.
Call (703) 383-9300. A member of our team will talk through what your loved one needs, and a Registered Nurse will conduct a complimentary on-site assessment before care begins.
The Day Gets Better From Here
Personal Care done right does not just meet a physical need. It restores a morning. It gives a day somewhere good to start from.
